I’m Mark Pauley — a Staff Engineer at Apple working on AI, and a lifelong synthesizer nerd.

By day I build things that think. By night I build things that squelch. Sometimes both at once.

I live in the Bay Area with my wife Erin (a sound engineer), two kids, and a room full of drum machines that my family tolerates with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

What I’m Into

Music & Synthesis — I have an unreasonable collection of analog synths, a Cirklon sequencer, a modular rig, and two SSL mixers. I studied electronic music under David Cope at UC Santa Cruz. My producer name was “Async” (retired, but the energy persists).

AI & ML — I work on this stuff professionally. I have opinions about on-device inference, privacy-preserving AI, and why most AI demos are bullshit but the underlying tech is genuinely transformative.

Building Things — Software, hardware, whatever. Currently building audio plugins (AUv3 synthesizers), analyzing acid house with machine learning, and teaching an AI to compose 303 basslines.
